The Styrian Improvisers Orchestra (STIO) is the only large instrument that is usually operated or led improvisationally using the conductor’s hand signals, gestures and symbols. Even though an algorithm comes into play this time - some call it AI or ML - over twenty-five musicians will oscillate between freedom and structure, while virtuoso improvisations alternate with fragile soundscapes. John Eckhardt first conducts the STIO as he sees fit, then serves as a human interface that converts computer commands into signals for the orchestra.
